Lumpkin, the Executive Director of the International Documentary Association (IDA), first saw DIRT! the Movie at the Sundance Film Festival, and knew that it deserved a place in IDA's Docuweeks festival. DIRT! The Movie has played twice daily in Los Angeles and will begin a week of screenings in New York at the IFC theater (August 7-16).
Every year DocuWeeks features some of the best and most groundbreaking new documentaries. And Docuweeks has a history of picking winners. In fact, in the festival's 13 year history, seven showcased films have gone on to win Oscars for best documentary feature and short film.
Michael Lumpkin recently talked with Larry Mantle on KPCC radio in Pasadena about Docuweeks, and DIRT! the Movie:
"You don't really think a lot about dirt. It's the stuff you walk on and it gets you dirty...But, I learned so much in that film and I think you come away from that film with a totally different perspective on dirt, which isn't dirty. Dirt is wonderful."
He talked about about how DIRT! examines an everyday topic in a way that's eyeopening - but also just plain fun:
"It's this way of looking at dirt, which really opens up your mind. It's key to the survial of the human race on the this plant. As you discover in the film, it really is key the survival of the human race on this planet. It's a very interesting film and it's a lot of fun as well."
The DIRT! team is proud to work with Michael Lumpkin and participate in DocuWeeks - and continue to raise awareness about the soil under our feet.
